Malawi’s ruling People’s Party (PP) has reshuffled its leadership in the Northern Region amid reports of divisions in the party.

However, PP acting secretary general Paul Maulidi on Monday said the changes were normal for the party and any organisation makes such changes.

PP has replaced Northern provincial chairperson Brown Soko with Frank Mwenefumbo and provincial secretary Good Kayira with Mary Mphasi.

Mwenefumbo now holds two critical positions in the party as he is also in the national executive committee (NEC) as deputy secretary general.

Soko and Kayira have since been considered in NEC as members and have also been put in the presidential campaign team.

Maulidi said the removal of Kayira and Soko has nothing to do with speculations that the party has warring camps in the Northern Region which could frustrate efforts to win the 2014 Tripartite Elections. He said the changes were also being made in other regions.

He said the changes were meant to reposition the party so that it prepares effectively for 2014 elections. He said the party was determined to sweep the majority of seats both for MPs and councillors and have Joyce Banda as the president.

On Mwenefumbo holding two positions, Maulidi said the party will decide whether to continue according him both positions.
